🔹What is Speech Therapy?

Speech therapy helps children improve how they talk, understand language, and communicate effectively. It’s guided by a trained speech-language pathologist (SLP) who tailors activities based on your child’s needs. At YoungFerns Eduworld, we help children with:

  • Delayed or unclear speech

  • Difficulty understanding or using language

  • Trouble expressing thoughts

  • Stuttering or fast/slurred speech

  • Autism or developmental communication delays

🔍 How Do I Know If My Child Needs Speech Therapy?

Your child may benefit from speech therapy if they:

  • Talk less or not at all for their age

  • Struggle to pronounce words clearly

  • Find it hard to follow directions

  • Get frustrated when trying to speak

  • Have limited vocabulary

  • Repeat sounds or stutter

  • Have been diagnosed with Autism, ADHD, Down Syndrome, or a language delay

A healthcare provider, teacher, or parent may refer your child after noticing communication concerns. We may also refer to audiology to rule out hearing issues.

🧪 Speech and Language Assessments

Assessments help us understand your child’s communication strengths and difficulties. The approach depends on the child’s age and needs.

✅ Initial Consultation

  • A short screening session with an SLP

  • For young kids: play-based observation

  • For older children: structured screening activities

  • Outcome: recommendation on whether a full assessment is needed

✅ Formal Speech & Language Assessment

  • Uses standardized tests to compare skills to typical age expectations

  • May take 1–2 sessions and include observations in school/home

  • A detailed report is provided with recommendations for doctors

  • May involve referrals to other professionals (e.g., audiologist)

🎯 What Conditions Are Treated?

Speech therapy at YoungFerns can help with:

  • Articulation disorders: Difficulty pronouncing sounds (“wed” instead of “red”)

  • Fluency disorders: Stuttering or cluttered speech

  • Expressive disorders: Difficulty expressing thoughts

  • Receptive disorders: Trouble understanding language

  • Apraxia: Knowing what to say but struggling to form the words

  • Dysarthria: Slurred or slow speech due to weak muscles

  • Aphasia: Difficulty understanding, speaking, reading, or writing (often after brain injury)

  • Cognitive-communication issues: Challenges with memory, attention, and problem-solving

  • Resonance disorders: Speech affected by airflow or mouth/nose structure (e.g. cleft palate)

🧠 What Happens During Speech Therapy?

Therapy sessions are tailored and engaging. We use proven methods and playful activities to strengthen speech and language skills.

Common Therapy Activities:

  • Mouth and tongue exercises to improve clarity and control

  • Facial movements to build coordination

  • Reading aloud to link speech to brain processing

  • Word games and puzzles to build memory and vocabulary

  • Roleplay, storytelling, and group activities to improve conversation and confidence

👶 What Age is Best to Start Speech Therapy?

There’s no “right” age, but earlier is better. Studies show children make the most progress when therapy begins early and is supported at home.

We offer both early intervention for toddlers and therapy for older children and teens. Adults can also benefit from speech therapy following injury, stroke, or illness.

⏳ How Long Does Speech Therapy Take?

Speech therapy duration varies depending on:

  • Child’s age

  • Type and severity of speech issue

  • Therapy frequency

  • Underlying health conditions

  • Consistency of home practice

Some children improve in a few months. Others may need longer-term support.
