Speech and Language Delay in Ipoh, Perak

Understanding Speech and Language Delay in Children

A speech and language delay means a child is developing communication more slowly than expected for their age. Speech refers to the sounds a child makes, while language covers understanding words and putting them together to share ideas. A delay can affect one or both. Many children simply need focused support to catch up, and the earlier that support begins, the faster progress tends to be.

At YOUNGFERNS in Ipoh, Perak, our KKM-licensed therapists use evidence-based Speech and Language Therapy to help children with speech delay build practical skills for everyday life. We work closely with your family, your child's school and, where relevant, their paediatrician or medical team, so support stays consistent everywhere your child learns and plays.

Common Signs of Speech and Language Delay

Recognising the signs early helps us tailor support to your child's real, day-to-day needs. Children may show some or all of the following:

  • Few or no words by the age most peers are talking
  • Speech that is hard for others to understand
  • Difficulty following simple instructions
  • Limited gestures or few word combinations
  • Frustration, tantrums or giving up when trying to communicate

Every child develops at their own pace. Support is worth exploring when these signs are frequent, last over time, or affect learning, communication or daily life.

How Speech and Language Delay Affects Daily Life

When a child cannot make themselves understood, everyday moments can become frustrating for both child and parent, and it can affect early friendships and readiness for school. Building communication step by step reduces frustration, supports learning and helps a child join in with confidence.

  • Parent home-practice guides

Frequently Asked Questions

Speech and Language Delay Parent FAQs

At what age should my child be talking?

As a general guide, many children say their first words around 12 months and start combining words by about two years. Every child is different, so if your child is well behind these milestones or you simply have concerns, an assessment is worthwhile. We see children from 12 months old.

Will my child grow out of a speech delay on their own?

Some children do catch up, but it is not possible to predict which children will and which will not. Early speech therapy is low-risk and effective, so seeking support rather than waiting is usually the safer choice.

What happens in a speech therapy session?

Sessions are play-based and child-led. A KKM-licensed speech therapist uses toys, games and everyday routines to build sounds, words and understanding, and shows you simple techniques to practise at home.

How is bilingualism handled for children in Malaysia?

Growing up with more than one language does not cause speech delay. Our therapists take your family's languages into account and support communication in a way that fits your home.

Where is YOUNGFERNS located and which areas do you serve?

YOUNGFERNS is at 18a, Jalan Meru Bestari A4, 31200 Ipoh, Perak (near Mydin Mall Meru). We support families across Ipoh, Meru, Batu Gajah, Taiping, Teluk Intan and the wider Perak region.
